My Vision for IOP
Trusted Relationship On & Off the Island
Building a relationship with someone is much easier when you aren’t in the middle of a transaction. We need to continue to spend time with other partners/entities on an ongoing, routine basis to understand their needs and ensure our needs are also identified. Then we can work toward mutually beneficial solutions.
Strength in Financial Accountability
IOP residents have become accustomed to a low tax rate due primarily to our strong revenue from tourism. However, there is also an expectation of a high level of service from the city. This requires a sharp focus on spending on the operations of the city and for larger, long-term projects. It also requires a focus on our debt levels while maintaining healthy reserves for any unexpected economic downturns.
Protect the Environment in All That We Do
We are blessed to live in a beautiful part of the world on a barrier island, and we need to do everything we can to protect it for future generations!
Resident Engagement Opportunities
By providing residents the opportunity to serve on special committees, continue dedicated office hours, continue monthly coffees with the mayor.
Focus on Our Future
City Council should play a role similar to a Board of Directors by implementing strategy, policy making decisions, and providing direction for city staff. Too often, we dive into the details of day-to-day operations, which is the role of our City Administrator. We need to expand our focus by making decisions that satisfy more than just the vote of the day, but rather, the long-term durability of our island.
IOP: Not Just a Place to Visit, a Place to LIVE!
Balancing a residential community and a popular tourist destination isn’t easy. It requires strategic thinking and a deliberate game plan to ensure both groups’ needs are balanced alongside the business owners on the island. We have increased our enforcement efforts the past few years to maintain a quality of life for all.
